Big Hat Book Signing

I just got word that we got our first shipment of new shirts and they should be heading out this week. Whoot! Also, there is a fun video of my mom's cat watching Cinnamon over at the Birdchick Blog.

The signing at Big Hat Books last weekend was loads of fun. And I was shocked by how many kids showed up. I mean, I kind of see the book as fun for all ages, but I had no idea so many kids would be there and were really into it--that is pretty darned sweet. Cinnamon had a great time because she was the center of attention, it was actually kind of hard to buy that she is such a disapproving bunny.

The book store staff was really sweet and had a blanket ready for Cinnamon to sit on while we were at the table. We were there for two hours, bet we did get breaks for Cinnamon to hop around the store. What was really sweet was that a family who lives with a bunny named Trixie brought a gift bag for Cinnamon (above). The bag was chock full of bunny goodness: Timothy hay, an organic apple, fresh organic dandelion greens, and organic carrots--let me say, she enjoyed the whole thing--including the paper bag. Thank you Trixie and Family!

We've had some other exciting developments as well! On November 16--one month after the book was released, we got a note from our supplier at Harper Collins that they were out of Disapproving Rabbits books and it was back ordered. A reprint is scheduled and more should be available very soon. If you have ordered a book from us and haven't received it yet--don't panic. There are still some distributors who have them in stock and we've been able to get hold some and will have them to you soon. But, if you want a book in time for the Holidays, I would pick it up when you see it. If you want it personalized, I would get your order in ASAP so we can make sure to get it on the list to ship in time for the Holidays. I signed all the books at Big Hat and I think DreamHaven has books left as well--if not, it's easy enough for me to pop over to DH and sign one from them.

Another exciting development is that Barnes and Noble is featuring the book on their Holiday Humor table--again, if you see one at B&N, I would grab it soon, I know they have their own distribution system and shouldn't run out but I have no idea of knowing the numbers there.

A third exciting development is that Urban Outfitters picked up the book too! Who knew bunnies were so hip? So, there are a variety of places to pick up the books.

Here is my sister Terri, my mom (in heels), me, and my sister Monica at the book signing.

Disapproving Rabbits In Indianapolis

This is a photo by John Rubbo, the official photographer of the Minnesota Companion Rabbit Society. He took this at the DreamHaven Book Release party.

Well, we have a whirlwind trip to Indianapolis coming up next week. Cinnamon and I will be on Daybreak Saturday Morning on WISH TV sometime between 8:30am - 9am. That afternoon, we'll be doing a book signing at Big Hat Books at 4pm. Members of the Indiana House Rabbit Society will be on hand with literature about whether or not a rabbit is the right pet for you and have live foster bunnies.

I don't think I can manage a Birds and Beers, we just don't have enough time on this visit--I have a large family so it's hard to squeeze everything in. Speaking of which, my mom will be at the signing. If you think I'm short, wait until you see her. And if anyone is curious, Non Birding Bill will be on hand too on bunny wrangling duty. So, come meet Cinnamon and learn about a great rabbit organization in Indiana.

Another photo by John Rubbo at the signing.

Bunny 'Splosion At DreamHaven

Bunnies were running amok at DreamHaven Books last night! The volunteers from the Minnesota Companion Rabbit Society really helped to make the signing special and fun by bringing some of their bunnies and MCRS was ready with information on living with a rabbit for anyone considering that life path. It was crazy and fun! When we were leaving for the event last night, we had received a shipment of books in the mail and we decided to take it with us on the off chance DreamHaven would run out. Within a half hour, the manager came over and asked if we had any extra--and they ended up selling our whole case! Fortunately, we live only a few blocks away and Bill had to run home and get a few more books that I had stashed in a closet!

I honestly had no idea how many people to expect and was surprised, overwhelmed and grateful to look up at one point and see a line through the store extending so far that I couldn't see the end of it. Holy Cow!

I have to say, Cinnamon was at her best. I was a little worried about how she would do with all the people. When I used to work at the birds store, she loved the attention and all the petting, but it's been a few years and I wondered if she was out of the habit. Oh my, how my concerns in vain! She was back in her element and she loved all the attention.

Bill was on Cinnamon wrangling duty, as she was excited to hop around the store (she loves carpeting) but to also he had to make sure she didn't get too close to the other rabbits (like cute little Coco above)--she just does not play well with other bunnies and I'd hate to see her get into a brawl and have it end up on a gossip blog.

When it was about time for the store to close, Elizabeth the manager asked if I would mind staying a little later because some people were on their way and were running late. If someone was making an effort to come for the book, I was willing to stay. I figured that they must have been coming from perhaps a far suburb like Chaska or Woodbury and just stuck in traffic--no, they were coming from Chicago! These ladies in the above photo came all the way to the Twin Cities from Chicago to get their book singed and meet Cinnamon! I was stunned. When I asked what else they had going on in the Twin Cities, they said they weren't sure, they just came up for this. They weren't the farthest, there was also someone who came up from Indianapolis too--Cinnamon's popularity is astounding.

As the shop closed, Bill and I looked down on Cinnamon, and she had kicked out her back legs and was laying on the floor--she was exhausted. So we took her home and set her up with a fresh carrot (complete with green top) in her Cottontail Cottage and then headed out to dinner ourselves.

I want to thank everyone who came last night--really, honestly THANK YOU! And I have to thank Ian and Margery on fm107 who helped promote the event on their show this week--I did have people come up and tell me that's where they heard about it. I have to thank Elizabeth at DreamHaven for not only providing drinks and cookies for all the humans, but also for having lots of fresh organic parsley on hand for all the bunnies. And again, thank you to the Minnesota Companion Rabbit Society for bringing bunnies and spreading the good word about rabbit adoption.

Disapproving Rabbits Book In Stores

Yesterday morning, I dropped Non Birding Bill off at work on the Minneapolis campus of St. Thomas University. We walked by the St. Thomas Bookstore and even though it was closed, we could see the Disapproving Rabbits book prominently displayed from the entrance--whoot!

On one of his breaks, NBB went to the downtown Minneapolis Barnes and Noble and found the book out and on display and texted me the above photo.

I also got a message and the above photo from Hasty Brook who went out to her local Barnes and Noble to find a copy:

"The kids and I were at Barnes and Noble this afternoon looking for books for John, and when I went to the desk to ask for help, I found the clerks laughing over a stack (6) of your books! They thought it was really funny! We were excited to find our Buddy in it- can't wait to get mine! I took a couple of cell phone pix of the books on the shelf for you. Congrats! It was on the shelf between Jon Stewart and a book called "How to Build a Bong"!!"

I'm not sure Cinnamon would approve being next to a book on modern bong building, but she would tolerate Jon Stewart. I had to take Cinnamon out to the vet's to get her nail's trimmed (and drop off a book). Afterwards, we also went around town to see where else one could find The Disapproving Rabbits book.

I took Cinnamon discreetly into the Har Mar Barnes and Noble and looked for the book. I couldn't find it and asked at the help desk--they were just unpacking it. I mentioned that it was my book and that Cinnamon was the star and they got excited. That's Janet in the above photo, she asked if she could hold Cinnamon--I warned that disapproval to the uninitiated can be a jolt, but she handled it well.

Then, they asked if I would autograph their store copies! I was so not expecting that--I figured that I'm too new and unknown, but they said that I'm local and Harper Collins is a big deal. So, if you want an autographed copy and one that has been personally disapproved of by Cinnamon--head to the Har Mar Mall Barnes and Noble. It even has the "Autographed copy" sticker honor--whoot whoot!

We then went over to the Roseville Borders and after some searching, found the book on the bottom shelf of the humor section.

Our last stop was DreamHaven Books where the manager, Elizabeth showed Cinnamon their display. Incidentally, there were only a few books left, but Elizabeth said that they would be getting more--especially for the Disapproving Rabbits Party on November 2, 2007! I'm so excited, the Minnesota Companion Rabbit Society will be there with information on house rabbits and some live foster rabbits--it very well might be a bunny 'splosion! And, there will be cookies for humans and parsley for disapproving bunnies! It'll be fun!

After all that excitement, we came home and I gave Cinnamon some bunny smack aka canned pumpkin--she does approve of that! Here's a video of her eating her pumpkin after visiting all the book stores, be sure to watch for the oh so cute bunny tongue action at the end:

Party over here!

The humans inform me that I'm going to be forced to attend a party for my book, along with other disapproving rabbits from the MN Companion Rabbit Society.

Bunny rights, I say!

It'll take place on Friday, November 2nd at 6:30 p.m. at DreamHaven Books in Minneapolis. I'm told they'll have books on sale there, or you can bring one you already own to get signed. I won't be signing (no opposable thumbs. harumph), but I might nibble a corner for you.

Correction: It's taking place at 6:30, not 6:00.
