We were heading out of town on a long drive, talking about Christmas, when Sharon said that she was ready to get another rabbit. She missed the scampering sounds, the chewing, and "that good rabbit smell." I agreed. We'd been putting it off because our schedules had been full of work and travel, but now, oddly, things were calming down in December.
About a minute later I got a message from my friend Laurie, who volunteers at the Humane Society. They had a rabbit, she wrote, that she thought would be perfect for us. We were about five miles away at the time. So we made a detour.
He was a big boy: about a year old and seven pounds. Super skittish when we got him into the familiarization room, but Laurie told us that he was a stray who was adopted and then returned, but once he calmed down he was very cuddly, loved being pet, and never bit. He hopped around the room, then hunkered under a chair, which is where I snapped this picture:
And this is after knowing us for 10 minutes.
So, we've adopted this big, loafy bunny, now named "Dougal," named after Father Dougal McGuire from the Father Ted TV series. He's still a little skittish, but is finally putting two and two together and realizing that tolerating humans = treats.
I don't know when we'll have regular pictures, as we're still getting him acclimatized to his new place (we adopted him on Monday), and his first reaction to any surprise is to bolt into his bunny maze, but still, it's good to have a rabbit in the house.

Congratulations! May disapproval warm your hearts this holiday season!!
Congratulations! Thank you for giving Dougal a forever home and some minions to disapprove of!
I believe this rabbit may be an ecumenical matter.
King Dougal! May he carry on the disapproving of Queen Cinnamon!
Sweet! He looks like a fine fellow.
Congratulations! I'm in love!
Welcome, Dougal!
Queen Cinnamon would approve of this!
He looks like a wonderful character!
Congratulations! What a cutie! EPIC nomming, by the way, and already working on his disapprovingness.
And yes, thanks for giving him a forever home!
Dougal looks every bit as disapproving as your beloved Cinnamon. Congratulations on your new baby.
Awwwwww congrats on your new bun!! He looks like he'll be the perfect match. And is your friend Laurie the IBKC Laurie?
YEY! Yes, Cinnamon would be fine with that. He does seems to be a great character. Disapproval is strong with this one ;-)
Mazel Tov on the new addition to your family! I know Dougal will be loved and quickly scamper his way deep into your heart. I wish you many, happy disapproving years with your new boy!
I'm so happy for you guys AND Dougal! And what a handsome boy, he is!!
Congratulations, and an early holiday celebration for you! What a wonderful addition to your family! Looks like he has already claimed the center of your universe!
Oh good for you both! I am so happy that you all have that good bunny smell back in the place... and a great home decorator to boot!
Can't wait to be a slave to a bunny again once I finish school and find a job!
Cheers!
Great name - Dougal was my favorite on Father Ted.
Yay!!!! Congrats
Congratulations Dougal!
You've landed in the kale at last!
I am happy to see your hearts healing enough to bring another bun into your lives, and enjoy that "new bunny smell"
My heartiest congrats on this beautiful new addition to your family. Dougal looks like a fine fellow!
I am sooo happy for you! but queen Cinnamon would disapprove of that small amount of greens in his mouth - needs to be much more with a carrotini on the side!
oh boy!! i know how exciting this is, congratulations. i hope he settles in quickly.
i would not know how to live without a wabbit!
YEAH! So happy! So, VERY happy for you and for Dougal!
Congrats to you both and to Dougal! Obviously, he was meant to rule over you...I mean reside with you. Yeah...
I am so glad for you guys!
1st pic: My name is Dougal and I disapprove of this familiarization room. Adopt me immediately!
2nd pic: This parsley is OK, not great, but OK. I give it a rating of "one-ear-half-down".
That video is too cute -- I love watching his little mouf working. Again, congratulations!
Yay! Keep Calm and Carry On!
Dougal is Da Man!
At this point he's WAY too cute to be disapproving. But I'm sure he'll work up to it. Congrats, all.
Congratulations!!! Do you have pix of the bunny maze? Please post, or post a link if they are posted elsewhere.
I'm looking forward to watching his own very special brand of disapproval unfold.
Welcome, Dougal! Congratulations!
He's got some big, uh, shoes to fill but he looks up to the challenge. Welcome to your forever home, Dougal!
YAY! Congratulations to Dougal for giving two great bunny slaves some gainful employment. :D
Congrats on the new family addition.
Such a handsome boy! What wonderful presents: a forever home for Dougal & a bun for you. Congrats and keep the pictures coming. P.S. I'm tickled to see a Father Ted reference.
Love the Father Ted reference!
Congratulations to Sharon, Bill, Dougal and Angel Cinnamon.
Yea!!!! He looks like my fatty boy Chowder! Congratulations! Great name too =:<
Aw, Dougal is precious! Congrats on your new addition!
Oh, he's a beautiful boy! Congratulations on your new family member -- I know you'll be basking in his disapproval for many years to come!
wv: coati -- Dougal's fur coati is so pettable!
This is the most awesome news! Congrats on becoming indentured once again.
xoxo
Dougal: "TED!! Has Len found the rabbits?!"
FANTASTICLY great name choice. He's handsome as heck and looks totally content (assuming you can keep those treats comin' at a reasonable rate).
Congrats all the way! *nose bonks*
Aw, hooray! Dougal, though it's your duty to disapprove, I hope you know how completely lucky you are to be in your new home.
Congratulations! How wonderful to hear a shelter bun has got a new forever home for Christmas!
I'm sure Dougal will be a wonderful bun in his own unique way.
I feel the disapproval welling up in this one. Congratulations!
That's wonderful, I'm glad for you both. And Dougal, of course. ^-^
I would have named him Father Ted.
Regardless, I am very happy for you and Dougal. Congratulations to all 3 of you.
Dougal done good.
I approve!
I don't know what prompted me to email you at that exact time, but I'm super glad that things worked out exactly as they did. Talk about serendipity! Congrats to you guys and to Dougal.
"Sorry Ted, fell over."
Yay! Welcome, Dougal!
Yay! Always good to give a bunny a home. :)
Also, Yay to Father Ted name! ;)
Congratulations to Dougal on his new home, complete with two serfs, uh, humans. It won't be long before he settles in, decorates to his personal taste, and begins the arduous process of training the help. For one so new to his environment, he already shows great disapproval potential, as well as excellent cheek chubbosity!
And, on behalf of all bunnies, thank you for adopting a rescue rabbit -- they're the BEST! I'm sure Cinnamon is watching somewhere and smiling with approval.
Congratulations to all of you! This is wonderful (bunderful?)
Dougal looks like he has what it takes to be channeling Cinnamon-ish disapproval very soon.
So happy for you guys. <3
I was just thinking about you guys and hoping something like this would happen! Dougal seems very disapproving. And why shouldn't he be????
Guinness, Angelina and I are so happy Dougal has joined your family! What a wonderful disapproving boy!
After a brief interview in the familiarization room, it appears that Dougal was willing to take you on. He knows he'll have an uphill battle re-training you as your bunchore skills have probably deteriorated. You must have shown potential since he allowed you to serve him some greens. Congratulations!
Hooray!! I love Dougal and his adorable ears! Ms. Cininimon is going to be so happy to know you're happy again! Can't wait to see all the adventures the three of you will have together!! Lots of love!!
What a beautiful bun! Wishing you many years of happiness with Dougal!
AWESOME! congratulations on a beautiful bunny. :)
Congratulations on finding Dougal. He's a cutie, for sure. May you have many happy years together.
is that my long lost brother? or cousin? We have the same fur tone! wheresluka.blogspot.com! find me if you can
Aw! Congrats on giving such a big cutiebun a forever home!!! Now, if only I could convince mom to adopt buns when the last of our kitties passes on...
I hope the cockatiel approves and is of that genial nature found somewhat rarely in er, well, er, their bunny housemates. All I want to say is I hope she/he will be willing to scatter some seeds for her/his new bun bud and join all of us in wishing you the very best that generosity, kindness and love brings to lives.
Congratulations! He is adorable.
After the sudden and unexpected losses of my two rabbits two years ago (about a month apart) I was not sure I could handle another rabbit, but I just missed having them in the house, too! Right after deciding to visit a shelter pair, I read this in C.S. Lewis' The Four Loves:
"There is no safe investment. To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket - safe, dark, motionless, airless - it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The alternative to tragedy, or at least to the risk of tragedy, is damnation. The only place outside of Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell."
I was surprised that he said, "not even an animal," and it was a reassurance that I was making the right decision to risk loving some new bunnies. I'm glad I did :-)
Many congratulations on your new arrival - he looks a splendid fellow. What does he think of nutriberries? Binkies all round!
Oh, Dougal, I am excited for you because you will be so spoiled, like a bun should! Cannot wait to hear about all your craziness!
Congratulations! So glad you found such an adorable new member of the family! Can't wait to see all the pics you'll take of him disapproving the world :)
WOW! It's great to see your newest addition and wish you many years of disapproval.
@rabbitsguy: I think it's
"Keep calm and disapprove" the British and the chive changed it.
He looks as though he will unhappy with you in a matter of days. Congrats!
Congrats on your new addition! He is very handsome :)
I love the name! Loved Father Ted
My heartiest congratulations, how wonderful! Look forward to much Dougal disapproval. :))
So excited for you and for us! Congrats!
Welcome Dougal! You're adorable!!
Yay for Dougal! What a handsome guy -- and such an amusing twisty nom nom chewing face he has ... (-:
I'm so glad you've decided to bring another rabbit into your home again! I am sure this is something Cinnamon would actually approve of. I look forward to being introduced to Dougal over the coming months!
Our rabbits DO approve!! Congrats!
Good on you! Great rabbit, great name!~
Els
Congratulations! What a cute bunny!
I'm sure he'll soon discover that he has nothing to fear and then his true bossy-bunny nature will assert itself.
Big Congratulations! I'm so glad you were ready to open your heart and home to another bunny again, and Dougal is so handsome. Can't wait to see him carry on the tradition of disapproving of.....well, everything! :)
Congratulations! Dougal couldn't have found better souls to adopt! I look forward to seeing the regular disapprovals.
He is adorable!! Congratulations and Dougal is a fantastic name!!
Father Ted is one of the best shows ever :0) xx
Just catching up here, so sorry this is late, but congratulations! Dougal looks like my Chester; hopefully he's not as grumpy.
